The repair that prevents repairs

Leather fails by drying out. Once it loses its oils it stiffens, and a stiff upper cracks across the flex point where the foot bends. That crack cannot be undone — it can be disguised, but the fibres have already broken.

Conditioning before that point is inexpensive, and it is the single thing that most extends the life of good footwear.

When to hand it over

Home care is fine for routine cleaning. Take it to a professional when there is water staining, salt marking, mould, or a colour you are hoping to even out — all of which are easy to make permanently worse with the wrong product.
